ATM skimming device demonstration in Denny
Police will be holding an ATM skimming device demonstration in Denny, following recent incidents when local cash machines were targeted by fraudsters.
Last month, s1denny reported that cops were warning locals to be on their guard after fraudulent devices were found on cash machines in the town.
Subsequently, police will be at Sainsbury’s demonstrating a tampered ATM machine to show members of the public how this scam operates. The demonstration will take place in the store’s car park on Glasgow Road between 1.30pm and 2.45pm on Friday, February 24.
Community officer, PC Iain Taylor, will be at the event. He said: “You may be aware that there have been a few local incidents recently in relation to bank cards being skimmed. This type of activity involves small devices being placed on, or over, certain parts of the ATM and relevant information being extracted from the card without the holders knowledge.
“There is also often a very small camera inserted over the number pad, which takes images of the numbers being pressed, i.e. your pin number. All the information is passed to a cloned card ready for use. Generally the persons taking the information from the bank card are situated nearby and can collect the info from a laptop.”
Referring to Friday’s demonstration, he added: “This will ensure that members of the public are aware of what to look out for and will be more likely to spot an ATM skimming device. I look forward to meeting you on Friday if you are able to come along.”
